The Theatre Zone of Barcelona - Parallelo
Every big city has its Theatre Zone. New York has Broadway, London has Shaftsbury Avenue and around, and Barcelona has Avinguda Paral•lel. This long avenue stretches from Plaça España with its Olympic Flame down to the Old Port. Parallelo is the border of the Old Town and the bottom half of the avenue still has the Old Roman walls with the fantastic old Portal de Santa Madrona, or door of Santa Madrona.
However, Paralello is more famous for its theatres and shows than its history. As far back as 1898, Barcelona’s own Moulin Rouge – El Molino – was operating as a theatre, entertaining local workers and sailors who docked into Barcelona’s Port. “The Windmill” is now undergoing a complete re-modelling with the entire building being gutted to make way for a new theatre space, but with the original façade still in tact.
The Apolo Theatre is a very big Theatre and another classic of Barcelona with a wide variety of performances and shows. The venue is also used for concerts and many big artists from the UK and the USA play here on European tours if their music is not as well known in Spain. Cuidad Condal is a favourite for the Catalan actor Paco Moran – famous for dubbing the voice of Woody Allen in all his movies, and more often than not has a comedy piece on. Unfortunately for the tourists, the performance is also in Catalan, so don’t expect to understand if you go!
The Big shows of Broadway and London also don’t escape the Spanish public, and some recent tours making their temporary home on Paralello have been Mama Mia inspired by the Music of Abba, Fame and Monty Python’s Spamalot – respectively at the Teatro Tivoli and the Teatro Victoria. Both Theatres boast fantastic installations, underground parking and wheelchair access, as do most others. The location of the Paralello Theatres is also an advantage for those metro users. Parallel metro station has both the green and the purple line, making travel to your next show as comfortable and quick as you can hope for.
Also worth a mention, although not strictly a theatre, is the Bagdad Club on the corner of. This is a live sex show that has been going for years, and is surprisingly popular – not just with the stag and bachelor parties coming over from abroad.
Many people can’t wait for the re-birth of El Molino, which holds a special place in the locals’ hearts. One thing is for sure, it’s re-birth will certainly add to the already impressive list of Theatres in the city centre.
